Glee stars Naya Rivera and Cory Montieth, along with the Jersey Shore’s Vinny Guadagnino, star in a new PSA series explaining what parents and kids can do to take a stand against bullying, and asking them to visit thebullyproject.com. The PSAs are being released in conjunction with the film Bully, which opens in theaters in New York and Los Angeles tomorrow.
The PSAs were filmed during the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City, which Rivera and Montieth hosted and Guadagnino presented the award for Outstanding Reality Series. The videos originally premiered on MTV.com and EW.com, and feature the stars asking Americans to teach kids to be “motivating, accepting, and supporting. To accept people for who they are and to stand up for other people.” You can all three videos here.
As for Bully the film, it will open in New York at the Angelika theaters and AMC Lincoln Square, while Los Angeles area residents can see it at the Hollywood Arclight, the Landmark, and AMC Century City. The CEO of AMC spoke out after it was announced that the film would be released without a rating, saying “AMC will show this movie, and we invite our guests to engage in the dialogue its relevant message will inevitably provoke.”
Previously, 17-year old out teen Katy Butler launched a Change.org petition to advocate for the MPAA to change the rating from ‘R’ to ‘PG-13.’ Her petition is up to nearly half a million signatures. Katy was presented with a Special Recognition Award at the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards from Harvey Weinstein.
New York residents might also want to plan on catching the film’s 8pm screening at the Angelika on Saturday, March 31, as it will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Lee Hirsch. For anyone not in those cities, the good news is that the film is expected to begin expanding to more theaters next weekend, so check back here for updates on where it’s headed next.
